Welcome. Dr. Julie Hirschhorn, System Director of Molecular Microbiology
Dr. Julie Hirschhorn has joined Geisinger Medical Laboratories as the system director of Molecular Microbiology. She received her PhD in cancer biology and post-doctoral training in cancer biology and translational research at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she most recently served as director of Molecular Pathology and associate professor in the College of Graduate Studies.
She is is board-certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) as a high-complexity laboratory director and as a technical supervisor in molecular diagnostics.
Dr. Hirschhorn's research interets include molecular microbiology, microbiology, PCR, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics.
Welcome, Dr. Marianne Downes
Geisinger Medical Laboratories welcomes Marianne Downes, PhD, MLS(ASCP)CM, program director of our new School of Medical Laboratory Science. Dr. Downes holds a Ph.D. in biology/clinical laboratory science from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. She is credentialed in instruction and learning environments. Dr. Downes is also a certified medical laboratory scientist, obtaining her certificate from Conemaugh School of Medical Technology, Johnstown, PA.
Prior to joining Geisinger she spent nine years at West Virginia School of Medicine in the Medical Laboratory Science Professional Program, most recently serving as an associate professor. Earlier in her career, she was involved in academic research, completing a research internship in molecular diagnostics at Children’s National Medical Center, Washington, DC. She has studied antimicrobial resistance in yeast, performing clinical sample collection and testing for translational science research at West Virginia University.
Her professional achievements are many, including author and co-author of several peer-reviewed articles, past president of the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Society for the Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS-PA) and former chair of the national ASCLS membership committee. Dr. Downes is currently chair of membership development for ASCLS-PA.
Welcome, Dr. Scott Peters
Scott Peters, DDS,has joined the anatomic pathology and dental staff in Wilkes-Barre. He will be based in the dentistry clinic in Wilkes-Barre, specializing in oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Dr. Peters is also an associate professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton.
Dr. Peters is a graduate of the College of Dental Medicine at Columbia University, where he also completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology.
Prior to joining Geisinger, Dr. Peters was an assistant professor of oral pathology at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and served as the lab director for Columbia’s Oral Diagnostic Biopsy Service. The departments of dentistry and pathology are excited to welcome Dr. Peters on board and to offer this new service to our patients and communities.
